Guatemalan Nature
Café of the Finnish Natural History Museum
01.02.2022 - 31.03.2022
With more than 12,000 species of flora and fauna, Guatemala is a biodiversity hotspot. Its location between two oceans and a mountainous terrain, which includes several active volcanoes and the highest peaks in Central America, give rise to a wide variety of ecosystems.
Habitats range from cloud forests in the highlands to dry thorn scrub forests and vast expanses of tropical rainforest in the Mayan lowlands. These are home to iconic neotropical species like the jaguar and the resplendent quetzal, as well as several restricted-range animals and plants found nowhere else on our planet.
In the Guatemalan Nature exhibition, I present a small sample of Guatemala's fascinating wildlife. Many of the species in the photos are under pressure from deforestation and habitat degradation, among other threats.
Visit the museum's page for more information about the exhibition.
